Our Changing Climate…what disaster management practitioners need to know

Dr. Gordon McBean,    Professor & Research Chair, The
Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction, Canada

In 2011, catastrophic events cost Canadian insurers roughly $1.7B and almost $1B in each of the two previous years, but the overall costs to societies were much higher.  Most of these insured losses were caused by extreme weather events.  Dr. McBean will share the scientific basis for projections of climate extremes in the future and the needs for disaster risk management and climate change adaptation.

360 Degrees of Crisis Communications

Robert Jensen,  Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs Department of Homeland Security, USA

A crisis by its very nature challenges an organization to respond and communicate that response to many audiences, especially with the public. MIT BCP Course to address impacts of Boston, Sandy, Newtown events.
BCM members get 10% tuition discount.

MIT Professional Education again offers its professional short course: “Crisis Management and Business Continuity.” Join us at the MIT campus in Cambridge, MA on July 15 - 19, 2013.

The program will provide up-to-date assessments and  knowledge on issues that affect companies and government agencies - terrorism, pandemic, cyber security, communications, news media - from the authorities involved with these efforts. The course also features BC Management’s own Cheyene Marling!

In addition this year, we will be offering discussions on the following recent events and their impact:
 ·  Boston Marathon bombings: panel session with key responding agencies
 ·  Hurricane Sandy: panel session of successful business responses
·   Newtown School shootings: Lt. Paul Vance, Connecticut State Police
·   Recent CERT congressional briefing; the latest cyber threats and initiatives

We also have a BCP lawyer and standards expert; experienced BCP program managers; DR status and trends expert; pandemic expert; federal, state, and local government emergency response officials; as well as television, newspaper, and radio news editors. Actual practitioners, not consultants! Where else can you have access to all this BCP/DR expertise in one course?

The program offers an effective combination of lecture, case studies, field trip to a DHS regional response facility, and class participation activities. Many case studies of actual crisis situations are used to emphasize and enhance the concepts. Several interactive class  activities provide additional hands-on experience.

Networking time and events are built into this course. Students will also practice what they learn: the course concludes with a crisis exercise in which students take active roles in a simulated disaster, including a realistic news/social media briefing.

Register by June 15 and save 10% on program tuition. Please reference priority code BCM10.

This is the fourth year of our extremely successful program. For more information, click the banner or click here.
